past knee-high yellow trumpet flowers

that out-blare the bees to camp at the summit,

look out on houses each corralled by its lawn,

where white smoke lifts from two chimneys

five miles apart, gunshots rise from the gravelpit.

Inside those houses women set tables

with linen, crystal and pears,

while I look in from the woods, think

theirs is the wilderness that can’t be tamed.

East of Albany there’s a starkness in November,

the grey crewcut of trees rounding hills

called the burned-over district for the fires

of spirit revival that swept over them and out.
